Summer flows were sustained by deeper, slower flowing groundwater from a reducing environment that was relatively nitrate-free. During winter, shallower water, which flowed more rapidly through a partially reduced zone, dominated stream flow and was responsible for 91% of the nitrate load. Calculations showed that nitrate concentrations in this shallow groundwater were significantly less than expected and, even though the nitrate load was greatest from this source, the amount of denitrification was also greatest in this zone because of the high N flux combined with the partially reduced environment.
